10.23.15: Please note correction has been made for part 2, row 2:
Before: Hdc-inc, hdc 1 in each of the next 101 sts, hdc-inc, ch1, turn
Correction: Hdc-inc, hdc 1 in each of the next 101 sts, hdc-dec, ch1 turn

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Materials
5 x 50 g cotton fingering 4 ply (875 yards) in 4 colors and a 2.5 mm hook.
Part 1 & 4: 3 x 50 g (1½ skein each)
Part 2 & 3 50 g (1 skein each).
Finished size: 38 cm x 170 cm ( ~ 15 x 66.98 inch)

The pattern is easy to adjust and you can make it your own design with yarn and colors of your choice.

Abbreviations (US)
Ch – chain
St(s) - stitch(es)
Sl st – slip stitch
Sc – single crochet
Hdc – half double crochet
Hdc-inc – increase half double crochet
Hdc-dec – decrease half double crochet
( ) – stitches in the row

Directions
Turn your work at every row and ch1. If you work with a thicker yarn you may have to turn and ch2.

Decrease – hdc-dec
Yarn over and insert hook through the backloop of the 1st stitch and pull through (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and insert hook through both loops of the next stitch, pull through and yarn over (5 loops on hook). Pull through all loops on hook.

Increase – hdc-inc
Make two half double crochet in the same stitch using the increase/decrease-tip.

Increase/decrease-tip: You can avoid visible holes on the edges if you work the 1st  st in the backloop and the 2nd st under both loops.

* * * All other hdcs are worked in the backloop only * * *

Part 1 – light grey (65 cm ~ 25.61 inch)
Increase last stitch on every row

Row 1: Ch 2, hdc 2 in 2nd ch from hook, ch1, turn (2)
Row 2: Hdc 1, hdc-inc in last st, ch1, turn (3)
Row 3: Hdc 2, hdc-inc in last st, ch1, turn (4)
Row 4: Hdc 3, hdc-inc in last st, ch1, turn (5)
Row 5: Hdc 4, hdc-inc in last st, ch1, turn (6)
… continue with row 1 & 2 until you have 104 sts in the row

Part 2 – dusty green (20 cm ~ 7.88 inch)
Both decrease and increase sts in in every row.
In that way you will always end up with 104 sts in the row throughout part 2.

Row 1: Hdc-dec, hdc 1 in each of the next 101 sts, hdc-inc, ch1, turn (104)
Row 2: Hdc-inc, hdc 1 in each of the next 101 sts, hdc-dec, ch1, turn (104)
... repeat row 1 and 2 until you have 30 rows in total

Part 3 – dusty rose (20 cm ~ 7.88 inch)
Work this part opposite of part 2.

Row 1: Hdc-inc, hdc 1 in each of the next 101 sts, hdc-dec, ch1, turn (104)
Row 2: Hdc-dec, hdc 1 in each of the next 101 sts, hdc-inc, ch1, turn (104)
... repeat row 1 and 2 until you have 30 rows in total

Part 4 – dark grey (65 cm ~ 25.61 inch)
Decrease first 2 sts in every row.

Row 1: Hdc-dec, hdc 1 in each of the next 102 sts, ch1, turn (103)
Row 2: Hdc-dec, hdc 1 in each of the next 101 sts, ch1, turn (102)… continue with row 1 & 2 until you have 2 sts left in the row.
Finish off and cut the yarn.

Finishing
I finished my shawl with a row of sc and a contrast color on both part 1 and 4 but it is off course optional.

Part 1 - with the color of part 4
Join with a sl st at the tip of the shawl and make one more sl st in the next st.Then work sc along the edge until you reach part 2. Finish off with a sl st (or 2) to make an even transition.

Part 4 - with the color of part 1
Repeat on the reversed side as on part 1.
